San Francisco

US District Courts Exhibit

see Latoga's Blog regarding this exhibit

Business Image Group assisted the US District Courts, San Francisco, in installing an exhibit program directly linked to the local communities served by the Courts. Using local historical photographs, the public corridors outside the court rooms have been appointed with content that connects the public to their communities’ history.

Our goal was to create an environment for the US Courts that evoked a positive visual experience combined with a consistent message of community and historical tradition.

This exhibit spans four floors: 15th, 17th, 18th and 19th. The 17th and 19th floors have many special exhibit spaces, both curved and over bench seating, that required specific content themes.

Technical process

These exhibits have the highest standards of visual integrity, are museum quality framed and are combined with well-researched information for each image. Photographs were scanned on a Creo Scitex scanner, chosen to be the best scanner available for the reproduction of historical photographs. For the reproductions, we used a state-of-the-art digital printer called the Lightjet 430 for printing. This device produces archival continuous tone prints, indistinguishable from photographs. The Lightjet exposes photographic paper with RGB laser light in 36 bit, matching the ability of the photographic paper's ability to render an image and rendering the pixels common with digital printing, invisible. To the eye, these prints are impeccable and even when viewed on a light table with a loop, the viewer only sees the grain of the photographic paper.

This 8-foot panoramic print is arguably one of the highest resolution prints of its size ever produced. It was made from a 34" x 10" panoramic negative of exceptionally high resolution, taken in 1915, photographer unknown. Prior to a digital process it was impossible to enlarge a negative this size, as enlargers were not made to handle negatives greater than 8"x10". Even upon close inspection of the print, the image resolution is absolutely grainless (that is, the photographic grain is invisible, whereas the grain is normally visible with enlargements from smaller negatives).
