I spoke with Lt. Banks Commander of the Traffic Division and confirmed that a unit of traffic officers will be assigned to the Skyline area. These officers will be deployed there for a 30 day period and make recommendations to the City Traffic Engineers on what will be the best ways to combat the speeding problems. Any suggestions should be forwarded to abanks@oaklandnet.com. // from Lt Armstrong 8-01-06

Apparently a bicyclist was killed on Skyline Blvd yesterday, struck by a motorcyclist. From reports I've read the motorcyclist was illegally passing over a double-yellow at speed, although I haven't seen an official police report confirming this yet. I live on Skyline and am sick and tired of the speeding up here, especially by motorcyclists, and also cars. We've tried many times to get more attention from OPD on the weekends, including a neighborhood petition sent to OPD and Jean Quan, participating in the Montclair TPST, putting up signs along Skyline, etc. Now an innocent person has been killed--very sad. I bicycle along Skyline every other day, and my wife has been run off the road on her bicycle by speeding motorcyclists. (BTW, I ride a motorcycle also and have no problem with those who ride responsibly). So now that we have people being killed on Skyline by (allegedly) speeding traffic, will something finally be done? // DM July 31, 2006

"Our local Neighborhood CORE group has written letters to the police regarding speeding along our stretch of Skyline, in the 9000 block between Ascot and Castle. We have not received any responses from these letters and emails, except from Jean Quan's office....I have lived here for 21 years, and have never seen anyone get a speeding ticket on Skyline Blvd. I think the speeders would hesitate to speed if they saw a police officer with a radar gun on occasion, or just an occasional police officer driving on the street. And the irony is that I'm sure every police officer in Oakland knows that Skyline is a speeder's paradise! "

Thank you for putting together the website about the hazardous conditions on Skyline and Ed Weiss's tragic death. As a cyclist in the area I recognize him and have been shaken by this terrible accident.
Whenever I ride I am passed by drivers when going around tight blind corners who simply can not wait until there is a safe time to pass. If I try to take the lane, they go completely into the opposite lane with no thought of who may be coming around the bend. Once going down Pinehurst I was nearly run over by a woman driving an SUV who took the opposite lane just to negotiate the tight corner. It is truly frightening. //RW 8/03/06
